Cairns Go Kart Hire – Fun for all Ages

Should I be concerned about my 10-year-old’s need for speed?

After spending a session with him on the Cairns Go Kart track I’m already dreading the moment he gets his drivers license. Maybe every mum should be banned from buddying up with their ‘tween’ son when there is tyres, petrol and racing involved….

When you sign up to do the Cairns Go Kart Track with your family you have a few options:

Option 1.

Let the ‘little’ tackers drive a Go Kart all by themselves. A smaller track exists for children from the ages of 5-10 years. Here they drive lightweight, fibreglass jeeps that have a maximum speed of 6km. The jeeps can carry 2 children at one time and even Mum or Dad can hop in and share a ride. The Go Kart track is a simple loop and the jeeps themselves are robust and slow. This option probably would have suited my 7-year-old (daughter) fine.

Option 2.

Share a Double Go Kart with your child and race on the main Cairns Go Kart track against others. Your child rides in a seat alongside you and both of you have a steering wheel sitting in front of you. If your child is a little nervous about the steering side of things they can just sit and enjoy the ride. Having ‘daddy’ drive suited my daughter fine and she was happy to let him do all the steering.

Option 3.

Same as above only this time you let your child steer and (try and) keep your hands off your wheel. Thankfully you still have some control whilst you go zooming around the Cairns Go Kart track. The brake pedal and accelerator is only accessed on your side. If your child is anything like my 10-year-old (boy) you might however find yourself shouted at a lot. “Faster, faster, faster!!” was Josh’s catch-cry. Something about the need for speed, the buzz of sitting close to the track whilst the ground sped by and the possibility of lapping his sister (and dad) just seemed to take over him. Scary (from a mum’s perspective), but exhilarating at the same time

Option 4.

Jump onboard a single Go Kart and racing others around the Cairns Go Kart track for a whole 8 minutes (seemed longer for some reason when I was buddied up with my son). This is only for those people that are higher than 150cm and have reached the ripe old age of 11. If we had had more time I probably would have given this a go. Josh of course will have to wait for now.

So if you want a bit of family fun that will suit all ages then make sure you give Cairns Kart Hire a go. On our final lap around my son’s comment was “Mum, if I wanted you to slow down I would’ve asked for Grandma Joy.” Point taken – he’ll be going by himself next time. And don’t even get me started on the possibility of him actually getting a real drivers license……..
