Kids Club at a Cairns Water Park

“That’s 14 Mum!!” shouted Josh as he sped past me yet again on his kneeboard.

It was his first time ever being towed at the Cable Ski Park and he had already clocked up a HUGE number of laps. And here I was happy that I managed to hang on for one lap……

What is it with kids? They just seem to have this natural ability to get the hang of things straight away….OR is it something to do with their lack of fear and consequences perhaps?

Granted my kids have spent many years holidaying up at Lake Tinaroo in the Atherton Tablelands, being towed behind vessels on all manner of aquatic equipment BUT this was the first time I’d taken them for a cable ski session at this Cairns Water Park. And seriously, those corners on the cable ski are no easy feat (or at least that’s how I found them – Click HERE to Read about Ladies Day at the Cairns Water Park).

“Look mum. NO HANDS!!”

“Look mum. NO HANDS!!”

Josh on the other hand, reckoned his hands were getting tired from holding on for Soooo long…..Poor Love! I never came across this problem. He even worked out that there was a ‘hook’ on his kneeboard to give his hands a rest!!

Signing up be part of the Kids Club at the Cairns Wake Park was a great idea. I met parents that morning who had booked their kids into every session (it runs 3 times a week during school holidays). Every kid gets as many turns as they can – either kneeboarding or wakeboarding – and there’s even a buggy service if they ‘fall off’ on the lake. I wish I had had the option of a ‘lift’ back during my Ladies Day session!

And every parent I talked to at the Kids Club were loving it. One dad had raced out to buy his 11 year-old gloves before the session. “She does it 3 times this week,” he told me enthusiastically. “She shows no interest in anything else. It’s so good for her upper body strength.

”It was then that I realised that I had found the perfect exercise for my son who has never really embraced any sporting activity for any real length of time. Finally I could get him to ‘workout’ without him realising he was even exercising (and yes, he just received a 3 month membership as a birthday gift).

Kayla, one of the kids I chatted to at the Kids Club was loving it too. “Its easier to get up,” she told me. Apparently she goes up to the Lake on holidays as well. Most kids agreed that it was easier to learn at the Wake Ski Park than when they were being towed behind the boat. And most I talked to were regulars.

And as far as I can see the Cairns Cable Ski Park is where we’ll be spending a lot of time over the next school holidays…..Hope to see you and your kids down there too!

Check out our Short VIDEO below to see what it's like from a KID's perspective :)

Good Things to Know:

  • Kids Club runs on Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 8.30am-10am during school holidays.

  • Cost is $35pp and price includes all equipment and coaching (please check on their website).

  • Aimed at ages 6-12 years.

  • Buggy pick up service included.

  • Bookings necessary due to limited spaces.

  • Slower speed than normal sessions making it easier for smaller children.

  • There is coffee and refreshments available BUT you are welcome to bring your own supplies and there is also a BBQ available for use (FOC).

  • If you want to get some GoPro footage make sure your camera has a float attached – apparently there is a stash of GoPros sitting at the bottom of the lake – don’t let yours be one of them!

  • The park is situated in Smithfield on the Captain Cook Highway. Access is via the Skyrail carpark.

NOTE: When it’s WET it really is WET at the Wake Park – even the main facility with the shop gets slightly flooded. On rainy days don’t wear good shoes and be prepared to do a bit of wading.

Finally, some people asked me what the water quality was like at the Cairns Wake Park – Here is the official answer:

“The lake is a natural environment filled by rainwater and run off from the hills along with a couple of small underground springs. It’s regularly ‘aerated’ by the wakeboarders and kneeboarders and gets “flushed” out regularly thanks to big tropical rains. The Park can also draw on water if there is a need during the dry season. Also, the water quality gets monitored and tested regularly.”
Petra, Cable Ski Park Manager.

We received a complimentary session BUT all views and opinions in this article are my own.
