QT Port Douglas – Quirky, Family Friendly Accommodation
There’s a certain amount of ‘quirkiness’ that helps set QT Port Douglas apart from all the other resorts in the Tropical North Queensland (TNQ) region.
As you check in you can’t help but notice the little differences straight away – a California Moke parked out front, vintage-style bikes for hire, a ping pong table in the foyer, quirky gifts for sale at the 'QTique' and those retro staff uniforms.
It seems that QT Port Douglas has decided that their ‘Quirky Theme’ is all about summer-living retro style, and they do this with a certain amount of flair. It particularly suits the boutique town of Port Douglas and it has helped gain them a strong reputation with travellers and locals alike, who often frequent the spot for afternoon drinks, meal times (the Bazaar buffet has a HUGE reputation amongst TNQ locals) and pool parties.
Positioned on the palm-lined avenue as you drive-in towards the centre of Port Douglas you’re still a far enough away to warrant a free shuttle bus ride or using your car to get into town (unless of course you opt for the FREE bike hire option).
Walking to town during the ‘Green’ Season will test the most hardened of walkers as the heat of the tropics is cranks up from 8.30am onwards. However if you’re keen to do this during the winter or ‘dry’ season (when the weather is milder), there is a great pathway to follow immediately out front of QT.
The Quirky Theme predominates all the way through the resort to your room which has a few ‘additions’ that you won’t normally see in your standard resort room – all these ‘extras’ are available for purchase at the QTique (gallery store) if you want to take the ‘retro theme’ back home.
Our 2-bedroom Garden Villa was set far enough away from the main central area to ensure that the only sounds of ‘action’ we were hearing were ‘natural’. Cue the early morning bird chorus and in the early evening, the sound of bats as they flew past on their way to tropical bounties. The only man-made sounds were the ‘Toots’ of the BallyHooley on the Sunday (click HERE to check out more info on this quaint little steam train ride).
For us QT’s ‘Quirky Techniques’ was really demonstrated during the breakfast buffet. The presentation seriously rocked and this ‘buffet’ is definitely NOT your run of the mill affair, its inspiration originates from street bazaars that you find across the world.
Breakfast at the Bazaar was very very cool
There were chunky terrines and pots full of tasty sausages, mushrooms tossed with fresh spinach and cream sauce, beans of different varieties and of course all the regular staples on offer to keep the kids happy. The juice and milk bar seriously rocked it with its BIG variety of drinks placed in jars and funky retro straws.
Even the location was a winner – open-aired and next to a lily pond inhabitated by giant goldfish/carp and barramundi….oh, and a little brown tree frog that came and visited us at our breakfast table.
For a family weekend away QT Port Douglas ticked all our boxes as a unique destination set in the heart of one of our favourite TNQ towns.
HOT TIP: If you’re visiting Port Douglas in the Green Season (Dec-Mar) then take advantage of the resort facilities during the ‘heat’ of the day. Save your local adventures, such as strolling 4 Mile Beach or window shopping along Macrossan St for the early morning hours, and journey out to a nearby freshwater swimming spots mid-arvo, or towards the end of the day (this is when the resort pool seems to be at its warmest).
