100 Things to See in Tropical North Queensland
I must admit to being pleasantly surprised when I opened the cover of 100 Things to see in Tropical North Queensland and started reading the pages within.
Not only were the words eloquent and descriptive BUT there were still little surprises on the pages that even I didn’t know about, and I’ve been a local here for over 30+ years…
Even though I know a lot about my stomping grounds – The Great Barrier Reef (where I worked on various boats for over 10 years) - I still found the information shared in 100 Things to see in Tropical North Queensland by locals Catherine Lawson and David Bristow both insightful and a pleasure to read. It also helps that the photos in the book are stunning and appealing to the reader as well.
Don't you just feel like diving in?
Both Catherine and David have lived and explored Tropical North Queensland by boat (which is basically their house) and by 4WD for the past 20 years. To say they’ve got a thorough knowledge of this region is an understatement.
From the tip of Australia to the Far Western reaches (out as far as Hells Gate – where you farewell Queensland and say hello to the Northern Territory) and south to Cardwell and Hinchinbrook, they’ve pretty much covered the highlights in 100 Things to see in Tropical North Queensland.
It helps that both are highly regarded travel journalists, authors (this is not the first book they’ve written) and photographers. They’ve even got their own website ‘Wild Travel Story’. It definitely makes 100 Things to see in Tropical North Queensland worth reading from cover to cover. It’s the perfect book for some armchair travelling. Perfect too if you are considering travelling to Tropical North Queensland, and a MUST for anyone that lives in this region and wants to explore it in earnest.
I'm aching to go north again & explore in earnest.
It’s definitely got me thinking about another Cooktown journey soon and continuing on to the Cape this time (once Covid19 is done and dusted that is). And as far as the ‘Wild West’ goes, sure we’ve been to Cobbold Gorge and Undara BUT what about going the extra mile to Lawn Hill? 100 Things to see in Tropical North Queensland has definitely reignited the wanderlust in me and urging me to go further afield to explore my backyard more!!
Time to start planning those road trips again!!
I love the little inserts within the pages were Catherine and David share a secret or two that only a local would know about. It demonstrates to me that this is NOT just a glossy coffee table book that describes all the well-known (and visited) places in Tropical North Queensland. This is definitely a book for those that want to explore the region in earnest and get off the beaten track occasionally. At the same token, they don’t mind sharing insights into the more popular attractions, especially the ones that are fun for local’s and travellers alike.
These spots should be on everybody's radar!
100 Things to see in Tropical North Queensland will definitely give you wanderlust for this diverse and vast region, and it’s a must for everybody’s bookshelf. Trust me, it’s a book that you’ll be referring to constantly during your time in Tropical North Queensland.
Good Things to Know:
Les Hiddens, the Bush Tucker Man and a long-lived Tropical North Queensland local has written the foreword to this book.
This is Exploring Eden Media’s second book about travel that they have published. Their first book covered the Kimberly region.
The book is broken up into easy to refer to smaller regions within Tropical North Queensland such as the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns, Port Douglas and the Daintree, Cooktown and Cape York, Cassowary Coast, Atherton Tablelands, and the Wild West.
There’s actually more than 100 Things to see in Tropical North Queensland – it’s closer to 200 things to do and see!
There’s easy to refer to maps at the back of the book that illustrate all the places that have been written about.
There’s a section called 'Travel in Tropical North Queensland' where all those niggly questions such as ‘what about crocodiles, stingers’ and the like are answered.
Have you visited Tropical North Queensland? Is it on your bucket list?
