Family Friendly Port Douglas Restaurants – 2Fish Seafood Restaurant
2Fish Seafood Restaurant has long been on my radar but after they scooped the title of ‘Best Seafood Restaurant in Australia’ I felt it was my duty to visit!
The kids were easily convinced when I informed them of their other recent award – ‘Top 10 Desserts in FNQ’. It was obvious to all of us we had to pay this Port Douglas Restaurants a visit next time we were in Port…..
Rather than committing ourselves to a full lunch or dinner we opted for the afternoon special 2Fish have running from 2-4pm. A bucket of prawns + wine ($24) and a dozen natural oysters + wine ($26) – the kids love prawns and fresh oysters, as we discovered during our recent caravan trip, and I was pretty sure we’d find a taker (or 2) for the wine ;)
Although we arrived specifically for the afternoon seafood special we knew we had to give the oyster ‘4 ways’ selection a whirl too – Vietnamese; Wakami, Wasabi Jelly and Green Apple (unusual sounding but actually my favourite); Rasberry Vinegar and Kilpatrick (Josh of course wolfed these down!). And although Rob has never been a big fan of oyster au naturel he managed to put away more than his fair share on the day….
Honestly though, going to a ‘flash’ restaurant is normally reserved for a special treat for Rob and I – mainly due to the kid’s boredom factor and that they never seem to really appreciate the dishes when they arrive but 2 Fish seemed to have it all sorted.
“2Fish is a great restaurant mum. I’m not bored yet!!” proclaimed my 10 year old as she moved onto her seventh drawing on the table…..good thing they lay down the white butchers paper specifically for budding artists like herself.
And when the desserts arrived you could see that all the kid’s prayers had been answered – 2Fish was about to go down in their books as LEGENDARY.
Fortunately there seemed to be no arguments deciding who would get what – Charlie (a big fan of sorbets) HAD to have the Sorbet selection – a trio of local fruit sorbets of which the Blood Orange was her favourite. Josh, who can never seem to get enough chocolate, chose the Chocolate and Hazelnut – choc soil, candied orange, choc tuille, hazelnut crème and hazelnut gelato. Rob chose the Taste of the Tropics (he loves fresh fruit and sorbet) and I got lucky last – Banoffee – ginger biscuit sand, banana icecream, caramelized banana, vanilla crème patisserie, salted macadamia and toffee. The hardest part was convincing the kids we needed a ‘taste’ test from their desserts.
Overall the family vote came in at a strong 10/10 – the kids LOVED the deserts and the fact they could draw all over the table, Charlie thought the music ‘rocked' (Chef’s choice I think) and Rob and I enjoyed the food and ambience, particularly as the kids were kept fully occupied. We also liked the fact that for a top notch restaurant you could still get VALUE for money.
And YES, we will be returning! Although this time it might be to ‘treat’ ourselves as adults. Of particular interest to us is the lunch special – a drink and 2 courses comes in at just $32 – BUT after tasting the deserts I may just have to opt for the 3 course set menu ($40). It wouldn’t seem fair after all to miss out on them.. ;)
