Located off of the northeast coast of Australia, Fitzroy Island is a quick 45-minute ferry ride from the Cairns Marina, making it an affordable trip to make. Due to its proximity, you can shuttle back and forth in a day’s adventure.

Fitzroy Island is a beauty in and of itself, greeting you with calm waters as you arrive. There are many beach spots to choose from, including Welcome Bay and Nudey Beach, both of which boast fantastic views of the shore.

You don’t have to be, because the Fitzroy Island Sports Hub at the island’s resort offers all the things you need for a great underwater experience. For only $10, you can rent a mask and snorkel for the entire day. There are fins and floatation vests too. Approach any one of the friendly staff on site and you can get everything you need to kickstart your snorkelling adventure. 

The balmy weather is to die for at Fitzroy Island, and you can expect it to be warm and sunny all year round! No matter when you visit, the conditions are almost always pleasant with an average temperature of 24 degrees Celcius even during winter!  

Another great thing about Fitzroy Island is that it’s safe - there’s absolutely no need to venture out into unsafe waters just to admire what’s underwater. With coral reef gardens mere metres from the shore, you can safely immerse yourself in a totally different world in a stone’s throw away - literally! 

Fitzroy Island isn’t just about snorkelling - there are other ways to enjoy the island too! Go bar-hopping, enjoy a coffee or two, or indulge yourself in exquisite cuisine as the sun sets over the horizon. Take your time at Fitzroy Island – there are accommodations for those that would want to lounge about and maximise their stay. From suites and hotel rooms to beach bungalows, there are plenty of choices to choose from depending on your budget. If you want to rough it up, camping by the beach is also another option!
