Family Friendly Accommodation Port Douglas - Port Douglas Motel
Kids are funny.
We’ve enjoyed many trips away as a family but they normally comprise of camping, or staying with friends or family. It’s not often that we get to stay in accommodation BUT it was as if my children knew exactly how to embrace the opportunity of an overnight stay at the Port Douglas Motel……
First there was the LONG wait for the shower. Granted, my kids had spent the whole day on the Great Barrier Reef and then had dived straight into the swimming pool upon our arrival at the Port Douglas Motel.
When they finally did get to the shower it was a whole 45 minutes later until I was allowed entry into the bathroom! Fortunately the Port Douglas Motel supplies plenty of fluffy white towels and there was still a dry one available when I was finally granted access. However, I was lucky to ‘squeeze’ anything out of the complimentary shampoo and conditioner provided (despite copious tubes being made available)! Well at least the kid’s hair looked good that night!!
Despite living in Cairns (only an hours scenic drive south of Port Douglas) we had spent a huge day out on the Great Barrier Reef on Quicksilver and we were happy to give the drive a miss. Plus we were super keen to stay on at Port Douglas and soak up some of the ‘holiday’ atmosphere that this vibrant little town offers.
That’s where the Port Douglas Motel came in. Rob and I had stayed previously and had been impressed by the Motel’s clean and bright appearance, it’s affordability, it’s spacious rooms (and bathroom) and it’s convenience to the main hub of Macrossan Street (only a minute walk away). We knew we had discovered a great little family escape right in the centre of Port Douglas.
On arrival though, I had to take photos of the interior of our room super quick, as it seemed like everyone in the family were making themselves at home very rapidly! My son’s highlight was obviously all the technology. He quite happily embraced the flatscreen TV and found the air-conditioner, taking command of all the remotes (there was also free WiFi available for his iPad).
My daughter on the other hand loved the gardens and all the little gnomes that were hidden amongst the foliage, and happily went skipping off to take some photos.
For us adults the highlights were the undercover parking (which allowed for us to park right outside our room, the lounge chairs around the pool (so we could keep an eye on the kids antics) and the friendliness of Lillian, John and Bernie (the family that own and run Port Douglas Motel).
But the biggest bonus of all was the fact we could walk out our front door and within a minute were wandering down Macrossan Street, the main hub of Port Douglas. This little Motel definitely gives you value for money in what is ultimately a 5 star location. We can easily see the Port Douglas Motel becoming a family favourite.
Good Things to Know:
All rooms have private bathrooms, flat-screen TV's, air conditioning and Free WIFI. There’s also an extensive DVD library available for free at the reception.
There’s a choice of Queen guestrooms, Queen plus single guestrooms or family guestrooms with some guestrooms being inter-connecting. There are 20 rooms in total and they can easily suite the single traveller, couples, and small or large families.
Some of the rooms are up one level SO if you have a lot of stuff to transfer from your car I would suggest requesting a room at ground level.
Rooms are serviced daily with fresh towelling provided.
There’s a fully equipped guest kitchen and BBQ facilities by the swimming pool and the guest laundry is also situated here.
You can book tours at the main reception and they also offer car hire.
Undercover car parking is available, with an adjoining parking area that is suitablefor trailers, boats, camper vans and caravans.
It’s a 2-minute walk to Four Mile Beach from this Motel.
Port Douglas Motel is family owned and managed.
